I rediscover Peters every summer when the kids are bored to be out of school. They don’t want to go back to school but they are on and on with the “I have nothing to do” or ” IIIIIII’m Bored” comments. And?… I say. They just stare with a look in their eyes that screams; you should pull a magic hat out your ass and start doing magic tricks to compensate me for bringing me into this boring world where I have enough free time to actually feel bored. My mind fills with a ton of super practical ideas of activities for them to engage themselves in – Read a book I say or ride your bike, mow the lawn, draw a picture… you know all those kind of low thought answers that clearly send a message to the kid that I am clearly bored of them being bored. Its a vicious circle that reaches its peak on those lazy summer nights where I’m clearly content to be killing time, but feel some tinge of paternal guilt that forces me into a split second suggestion that is both slightly different from the norm and full of sugar. “Hey guys” I say… Who wants to go to Peter’s and get a milkshake? This is followed by Woot Woots and yeahs. We go get shakes and sit around on a picnic table and have a real moment that is beyond great. From that moment forward they will always suggest going to Peters for a milkshake when they are bored. This will continue ’til the Alberta cold returns and we forget the milkshakes until the kids are one year older and twice as bored the following summer. Funny thing is when I ask where we should go for dinner they never suggest Peter’s.

You know those commercials for paper towels where those dudes are wearing those quilted onesies and they jump out from around the corner to belly flop onto the latest spill? Well, if you look close they have actually sewn together a suit of Peter’s hamburger buns to give the illusion of a super absorbent sponge pockets suit. Yup, this bun is perfect for sopping up baby slobber and grape juice. I’m actually tempted to try one of these buns between my cheeks as a fart muffler the only thing stopping me is its crumbly texture that would turn my shorts into a bird feeder.

Growing up in the seventies, I don’t recall the kids of that generation smelling bad. We must have been more hygienic and were taught to wipe our bits better because from what I can recall none of my friends smelled like skid marks like the kids do now days. Rather than take a long look at my selective recollection and rather than confront the parents about their booger picking, stink bag kids – I have chosen to come up with a new strategy to keep kids smelling better. I’ve chosen to market the sauce that Peter’s soaks their patties in as bubble bath.
MMMMMM, your kids smell so savory, how do you do It?
It’s simple. I bathe them in high fructose tomato bbq sauce.
That sounds expensive?
Actually it’s not, it just smells that way.
Does it irritate their sensitive skin?
No, they love it. In fact, they love it so much I’ve caught them trying to eat their tub toys.

Let see, from what I can recall there was mustard mixed with a sweet tomato BBQ sauce. Catsup mixed with tomato sauce, or was that just BBQ sauce?Llittle onion bits that have been infused with a sweet tomato sauce……. oh and a slice of cheese that was a cheddar slice, no wait it was swiss. Yeah, that’s it…. it was swiss. Well, swiss or mozzarella. Hmmmm, well it had the texture of cheese, but really it tasted like sweet tomato BBQ sauce. There is so much of this sauce that It seems like they really think highly of it, so much so that I’m surprised that they do not offer it as a milkshake flavor.
Other considerations
I am not one to second guess what you are doing there at Peter’s. As one of Calgary’s longest standing burger joints you have proven beyond a doubt that your stripes are certainly earned by popular patron vote. In fact, I leveraged your charms on a summer night some years ago resulting in my first date and first real kiss. I am not going to question the importance of a place built to take advantage the short summer the we get here in Calgary. Nothing better than heat coming off the pavement, wearing only a T-shirt into the late hours of the evening and sharing some picnic table time at a drive thru with people that make your life great. But this is BurgerQuest, not great atmosphere/milkshake quest. So, I will be back for more than my fair share of double strawberry, banana and marshmallow shakes, but I won’t be coming back for the burger.
Final Evaluation: What would you do to have one of these again?
I will buy this burger and throw it away if that’s what it takes to keep having your milkshakes.

After many requests, we finally headed up to Calgary’s most well known burger joint. It was a sunny day and the car ride up was full of bro jokes, good tunes, and the ever present complaining about work. We arrived at Peter’s, parked the car, and placed our orders at the walk up windows after Wunder Bun and Gravy went across the street to get cash since Peter’s is still a no debit place. What’s the deal with that? At least put a stand up ATM beside the order window.
Anyway, we got our food, headed over to the picnic tables under the trees, and ate while the traffic went by and people around us had shakes, fries and burgers. I had a really good time and what I have come to realize is that the experience at Peter’s is all about the people you are with. If I was to drive up there and scarf a burger down by myself, I would feel pretty terrible and quite shameful. But the adventure of seeking out a burger with your pals from a classic drive-in is pretty intoxicating. I have to admit, Peter’s provides the best drive-in experience in town. But what about the burger?

Peter’s bun is not good. I don’t know what else to say. Normally, I would try and find something clever to say and relate it to a life experience that provides some kind of humorous comparative tool, but I am at a loss here. It’s no good and should not be used for a hamburger. It’s substandard, below par, crappy, off-putting, lame, irrelevant, inconsequential, flavourless, disappointing, bad, sucky, shitty, wouldn’t eat it if I was starving and all I had in my fridge was a Peter’s bun. Like I said, not good.

I see that you have put 1.5 patties in my burger. Interesting approach since nothing is more appetizing than uneven meat distribution and the visible rip in the half patty. It really adds a little something to the burger. Oh, I also appreciate the super acidic sauce that you lather on the 1.5 special to cover up the obvious low quality of your product. It creates a mushy meaty mess that can only be described as drive through haute cuisine.
Toppings 3/30
Well, the absence of fresh vegetables and pickles really leaves me with nothing to talk about other than the chopped onions. I don’t mind chopped onions, so Peter’s gets points for that.
Other considerations
Before my concluding statement, I have to give Peter’s a big nod for surprising the hell out of me with a ketchup packet that did not make me want to curse violently. Regular readers of the site will know that I will not abide ketchup packets at a sit down restaurant and grudgingly use them at drive-ins/takeout places. Too little ketchup for the messy return. BUT – Peter’s has a giant ketchup packet that holds around 5 ketchup packets worth of high quality Heinz. It’s probably the best thing they have going on. I tip my hat to you, Peter’s.
Peter’s is a really interesting place. I think that almost everyone goes there at least once a year. You get into this moment of of crazed logic, like when you impulse buy something, and get a burger that has 1.5 patties, a giant box of soggy fries, and milkshake. It seems so great and you get really excited and then you eat it and have a serious case of buyer’s remorse. In this case, buyer’s remorse manifests itself in some quality time in the boardroom.
I think part of it is the fun of going with your pals while taking part in a Calgary institution. Let’s be honest, it’s pretty hard to find anything here that has been around as long a Peter’s, so it’s nice to feel like you are taking part in old Calgary. That’s the appeal of Peters – good times in old Calgary. It has to be, because it certainly is not the burger.
Final Evaluation: What would you do to have one of these again?
Like most people, I will have one of these again in the moment of nostalgia induced crazed logic. It’s inevitable. Why fight it?

As a born n’ bred Calgarian, I’m hard-wired to love Peters. My relationship with this spot goes back to when I was a young boy, when a trip to Pete’s was a very special thing. We would go there when my cousins from Edmonton were in town, or simply for a Sunday afternoon treat. Either way – I loved it.
In my teen years, a bunch of us would cram my bud’s Volvo station wagon and head to Peter’s on hot summer nights when there was nothing else to do.
And later still, it was the hot spot following a big Stampeder win (or loss) at McMahon.
In University, when I had to select a local business to do an operations study on – Peter’s Drive In immediately came to mind. Gus Pieters was gracious enough to spend nearly a full day with me, showing me the secrets behind his successful business. Though the truth is, there isn’t much to it. He treated his suppliers well and his staff even better. He believed any restaurant should be absolutely spotless. He regarded cash tills and calculators as wasted technology, instead requiring (and trusting) his team to manually add up all orders and return the correct change. He passed on numerous opportunities to franchise, sell the business, or simply get paid big bucks to allow someone else to use the name. He was perfectly content to run his one location the best he could and never wanted more.
Now that I’m a new father, I can hardly wait to take my daughter to Peter’s for her first burger n’ shake. Is 3 months too early?
In short – I have a long history with this place, and nothing but fine memories of it. But the problem is, if you actually assess a Peter’s Drive In hamburger by its individual components, it just isn’t that good. And maybe that’s why we’ve been putting this review off because we knew that it wouldn’t be favorable.
But you’ve been asking for it, and at some point it had to be done. So a couple of weeks ago your brave knights headed up to 16th Ave and had our fill of what Pete’s has been offering more almost half a century.
So read on if you must, but do so knowing that what follows was written with equal parts honesty and guilt over tearing apart a place that deep down I love.
Overall experience 6/10
Peter’s suffered some collateral damage in the expansion of 16th Avenue. Gone is the beautiful green space that used to occupy a large area north of the building itself. What remains is roadway, meaning you are relegated to chowing down in either your car, or at one of the picnic tables set up in the parking lot.
Bun 19/30
Basic bread that was fairly fresh but offered nothing in the way of unique flavor or texture.
Meat 13/30
The best thing about Peter’s is the fact that you get a burger and a half. But this meat is just barely better than the cheap patties being served up at places like CB’s. The meat is absolutely drenched in BBQ sauce – always a tell tale sign that the beef itself ain’t great.
Toppings 12/30
What toppings? There is no veg here apart from a healthy dose of chopped onions. No lettuce, nor a pickle can be found. What you do have is way too much ketchhup/BBQ sauce and relish. Credit to the new owners for offering fried onions – a nice touch but not enough to get this score into the teens.
Final Evaluation: What would you do to have one of these again?
If you’ve reached this point of this write-up…so much for ignoring it. So let’s just sum up by saying that in spite of its flaws, I will continue to be regular patron because, though it isn’t reflected in the score, this is a good place and its ongoing success is proof enough that this (or any) review means squat.

Just call a spade a spade already. I don’t care how attached Calgarians are to this atrocity of a bad burger, it’s still a bad burger.
If you have visitors coming from out of town, to whom you have hyped up the quality of Alberta beef, my only advice is to take them somewhere, anywhere else than Peter’s.
My favourite thing about your article is that while the scores adequately reflect the overall quality of the burger, your review is incredibly cautious. Just call a spade a spade already…
I agree, this is a bad burger. But like our Chickenburger in Halifax I don’t expect outside-of-town people to like it, yet it is a historical local favourite. Now, I hear that Peter’s has gone downhill, what with new ownership and what not. And it is good for what it is. But compared with Boogie’s Burgers down the street there is no comparison. Nevermind the fact that some of the best burgers I’ve had in my life have been in Calgary… gosh, we should stop talking about Peter’s already… at least, to tourists.
I agree completely. When I first moved to Calgary I was taken to Peter’s since it was a Calgary instituition. It was horrible. The burgers were tasteless and the fries and rings both come from a box in the freezer. If someone put in a little effort into making the burgers and seasoning the meat properly they would be unstoppable (and worth going back to). Even hand cut your fries or make your onion rings…come on people it’s not that hard.
Needless to say I have been back once since my initial visit and was just as dissapointed as the first time.
